A fire early Monday morning heavily damaged portions of a house in Bethel Twp. but residents and their pets reportedly escaped without injury.

The fire burned at a home on the 11500 block of Gerlaugh Road in the Park Layne area, and the Bethel Twp. fire department was dispatched at 2:44 a.m.

Interim Bethel Twp. Fire Chief Jim Snyder said the house is “probably totaled,” and he and the assistant fire marshal were digging through debris Monday morning, trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

“I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a total loss,” Snyder said.
